This year's Spanish Osteen mango season began early. "Production is about the same, perhaps slightly larger than last year," says sales manager Kenneth Meyer. He has been working for Natural Tropic for years. This is a cultivation and export company in Malaga, Spain.

"It wasn't an easy start. There are many imported mangoes on the market. These are from Brazil, Israel, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. We need somewhat higher prices for the Spanish mangoes. And people always have to get used to them. But, sales are picking up now."

"Spanish Osteen mangoes are well worth their few euros surcharge. However, many people still aren't familiar with Spanish mangoes. Not only in our export markets. But in Spain, too, the local mangoes could use some marketing. People must start to recognize Spanish mangoes' flavor. I'm sure consumption will increase a lot then," says Kenneth.

Size 6 and 7 Osteen mangoes currently cost between €7 and €7.50. The size 8 to 12s are going for €7.50 to €8. Osteens, the main variety, are Spanish mango farmers' showpieces. In October, the Keitt will also come on the market. The Kent and Irwin varieties are cultivated in Spain too.

Natural Tropic offers organic and conventional mangoes. "Organic mango sales are presently still a bit sluggish. But that will improve. That's when the season gets going a bit more, and Israel leaves the market."

The cherimoya, both organic and conventional, seasons also begin at the company this week. "The volumes are better than last year, and the quality looks good. If the weather stays good, we'll have a nice season. Prices are now at around €2.50/kg, ex-Spain. But those are starting prices. They'll drop slightly as the season progresses," Meyer expects.

Cherimoyas are a true emerging product for this Spanish grower. "A few years ago, we sold boxes at a time, now its pallets. It's a fragile product, though. So the chain has to be in perfect order. That's to deliver the cherimoyas as fresh as possible elsewhere in Europe. We are looking for more buyers for the organic variety."

Last but not least, the Spaish Greenskin avocado season starts at the end of September. "We haven't had many of these in recent years. But the prices were good. We'll see what the new season brings," Kenneth concludes.

Natural Tropic has a stand at Fruit Attraction in Madrid: Hal 10, stand H01A.
